with President Lyons
As we enter the last semester of this auspicious year 2000, I am consumed with thoughts about the legacy of Dominguez Hills' past and the promise of its future. On one hand, the past bears wonderful accomplishments, and on the other hand, the future hovers, ready to test our commitment to make the promise possible.
Even before she earned her teaching credential, Dr. Farah Lee Fisher, professor of special education and technology, was busy helping her classmates learn by tutoring them so that they could earn their diploma.
New Vice President for University Advancement Appointed
Alphonce J. Brown, Jr. is the new vice president of University Advancement at CSU Dominguez Hills. He assumed his duties July 31, 2000.
MacAllister named Special Assistant to the President, Affirmative Action Officer
Linda S. MacAllister's coffee mug is enameled with a self-deprecating verse: "I'm proud to be an atturney, atorny, aturnee, lawyer." It belies the importance of her job.
Ambrosetti
Appointed
Associate Vice President
for Faculty Affairs
Ronald J. Ambrosetti already had his master's degree and eventually got his doctorate after the Army called him up in 1969
"I got drafted and ended up being an academic in a very strange way," says Ambrosetti, the new associate vice president for Faculty Affairs.

V Grant Targets
Improved CBEST Test Scores
CSU Dominguez Hills and El Camino Community College have become partners in a teacher preparation Title V program funded by the Department of Education's Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
The five-year, $2.1 million grant is directed at achieving better retention rates for CSUDH students seeking a career in teaching as well as improving scores on the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). It is part of an effort by the federal government to support multicultural colleges and universities.
Munashe Furusa, Visiting Scholar From Zimbabwe
Preparing at his LaCorte Hall desk for his next lecture, Munashe Furusa is thousands of miles from his family and his friends. He packed only what he needed: He brought Africa with him.
From the Department of African Languages and Literature at the University of Zimbabwe, Furusa has been a visiting scholar at CSU Dominguez Hills since the spring semester, continuing into the fall. Housed in the Department of Africana Studies, he is teaching courses in African world literature and culture and oral literature in the African world.
Literary CSUDH
A "Literary Los Angeles" article appeared in the "Book Review" section of the Sunday Los Angeles Times last spring. It cited published university authors and editors in the Los Angeles area, and inadvertently overlooked CSUDH in its compilation. Tim Woodhull, media relations director, compiled a report of CSUDH faculty and staff authors. Woodhull notes "these members of the campus community, whose works span the wide spectrum of fiction and non-fiction, deserve recognition." Following are the results of his survey. If we have "inadvertently" missed someone, please let us know. - The Editor
