Eureka! International Composer Presents “ARCHIMEDES” Opera At CSUDH

Carson, CA - Visiting composer/digital media artist James Dashow will present scenes from “ARCHIMEDES” – A Planetarium Opera on October 27 at 8:00 pm in the Claudia Hampton Lecture Hall in Welch Hall at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). The concert is free, and open to the public.

The program will also feature other computer-driven digital media works by Dashow with six-channel, digital surround sound and wide-screen digital video. The evening will showcase the Hall’s more advanced technological capabilities. The program is presented by The Division of Performing and Digital Media Arts (DMA) and the Music Department, with help from Instructional Media Services. Dashow will also present a master class for students in DMA 335 at 1:00 pm that same day.

Organizers urge people to come and check out the concert. “It’s experimental art using new media. Dashow is an internationally recognized composer/media artist. This uses the Claudia Hampton Lecture Hall in unusual ways that highlights its capabilities,” says David Bradfield, professor of music. “And—I think this will be 'kewl'.”

A pioneer in the field of computer music, James Dashow has taught at MIT, Princeton University and the Centro para la Difusion di Musica Contemporanea in Madrid. He lectures extensively in the U.S. and Europe and served as the first vice-president of the Computer Music Association.

Archimedes was the greatest mathematician and scientist of antiquity and is considered one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time. He is also famous for coining the phrase “Eureka!” (“I have found it!”) after solving a particularly vexing problem while in the bathtub. Legends say he was so thrilled that he ran home naked.

Concertgoers are asked to refrain from similar levels of enthusiasm.
