Cal State Dominguez Hills To Present Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House”
Carson, CA - California State University, Dominguez Hills presents the Tony Award winning adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s, “A Doll’s House.” Directed by Professor Theatre Arts Sydell Weiner, this classic is presented at The Edison Theatre on the university campus. The show plays March 11,12,18,19 at 8 p.m. with two matinees on March 13 & 20 at 2 p.m. This adaptation by Frank McGuiness won the Tony Award in 1997 for Best Revival. When Henrik Ibsen began work on “A Doll’s House,” he made the following observations: “There are two kinds of moral law, two kinds of conscience, one in a man and a completely different one in a woman. They do not understand each other, but in matters of practical living the woman is judged by man’s law, as if she were not a woman but a man.”
Although the play was first produced in 1879, it still has relevance for audiences today. The ethical problems of hiding the truth to protect a loved one, the social situations related to marriage and divorce, and the personal issues of trust and intimacy are the ingredients of high drama both on stage and off. “A Doll’s House” is considered a classic because these are universal issues, and Ibsen addresses them in a way that touches us to the core.
