Advisory “Rising to Excellence: A Weekend Celebration ” CARSON, Calif. – Dr. James E. Lyons, Sr., president of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), will moderate a special forum to introduce graduating Los Angeles area African American high school students to university presidents from across the country. The forum will be held on Saturday, April 17, from 9:30 a.m. – noon in the Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles. Students will participate in a “Rites of Academic Passage” ceremony on Sunday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at The Beverly Hilton hotel. WHO: James E. Hills As part of its annual ceremony for African American graduating high school students, College Bound will hold a forum to engage university presidents from throughout the nation as they discuss why college is a necessity and not a choice. Each president will be given 10 -15 minutes to present their respective university to the students and their parents. Following the presentations, there will be a question and answer period for student and parents to directly address the university presidents. On Sunday, students will participate in the “Rites of Academic Passage” at the Beverly Hilton. Billed as College Bound’s major fundraiser, the ceremony is designed to honor graduating high school seniors who are moving to the next level of their academic studies at various colleges and universities. Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, president, Resselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York; Dr. Horace Mitchell, vice chancellor, Business and Administrative Services, UC Berkeley; and Dr. Dereck J. Rovaris, Sr., assistant dean, Graduate School and director of Graduate School Placement, Xavier University, are expected to be among the presidents representing their universities.
