Quetzal Performs, Discusses Facets of Chicano Music on
March
1
Carson, CA— An interactive musical demonstration of Chicano music, Resistance,
Redefinition and Hybridity in Popular Culture, will
be given by the popular Chicano music group Quetzal from
7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, in La Corte Hall at California
State University, Dominguez Hills. It is part of the Chicana-Chicano
Studies Department’s Primavera Music Series.
The artists will showcase a live performance of their music,
which combines Mexican, Afro-Latin, jazz, Cuban, and rock
elements. They will demonstrate the roles of several instruments,
including the jarana (a thin guitar), cuatro (a guitar in
the jarana family), cajon (a box-shaped percussive instrument
with strings), bata drums (two-headed drums), and others.
There will also be discussion and interaction with the audience.
Martha Flores of Quetzal holds a degree in ethnomusicology
from UCLA. She plays congas, bata drums, percussion, and
other instruments. Besides her performances, she has worked
extensively with the community to make music, art, and culture
more accessible to youth. She is also a lyricist and songwriter
and collaborates with other groups, as well, in the East
Los Angeles cultural scene.
Quetzal Flores is the main instrumentalist of the Quetzal
group. The group strives to use its music to not only entertain,
but also to unite social issues with personal topics in a
way that illuminates the heart of the Mexican-American legacy.
The event is free and open to the public. The event will
be in room A-103, the recital hall on the first floor.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is at 1000 E. Victoria Street,
off Avalon Boulevard between the 91 and 405 freeways and
