CSUDH: Constitution Day 2006 Addresses Voters Rights, Reparation, Congresswoman Leading a Town Hall Meeting
Carson, CA-Constitution Day 2006 will feature two addresses by Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA, 37th)—including
an open Town Hall meeting on voters rights and ballot protection—a pickup of a national address by General Colin Powell,
and addresses by leading experts on politics, political science, and civil rights.
Constitution Day is free and open to the public. All but the Congresswoman’s Town Hall meeting will be held in Claudia
Hampton Lecture Hall, D-165. The day will start at 10 a.m. with a Presentation of Colors by the ROTC.
At 10:05 a.m. a political science panel will convene on the topic titled “Contemporary Constitutional Issues.” That
panel will be followed at 11 a.m. with the pickup of a speech from Washington, D.C. and a reading of the Preamble to
the Constitution by Powell. The campus’ bells will then ring in conjunction with the national program of Bells Across
America.
The Congresswoman will address the topic titled “Separation of Powers” from 1 to 2 p.m.
There will be a 30-minute break, then, at 2:30 p.m., College of Health and Human Services Dean Mitchell Maki, a
leading expert on Japanese internment during WWII and subsequent the reparation, will give the address “Righting a
Constitutional Wrong: Japanese American Experience.”
The Hampton Lecture Hall room is on the south side of the Welch Hall building near the stairway. It has an external
entrance. Welch Hall is directly east across Toro Center Drive from parking lot 3.
Millender-McDonald will host the Town Hall meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. There will be a
comprehensive look at the procedures, requirements, and regulations on Federal Elections. The mid-term elections in
November will be the primary focus. Millender-McDonald will also use the forum to ensure that voters know their rights
and know how their ballots are to be protected.
The Los Angeles County Registrar and other local officials will also be at the Town Hall meeting in the theatre with
information on security, reliability, and accessibility standards for electronic voting machines, as well as sample
forms and, for demonstration purposes, voting equipment. There will be some audience participation.
The University Theatre is east of Toro Center Drive, across from parking lots 3 and 6.
The campus is at 1000 East Victoria Street, on the east side of Avalon Boulevard between the 91 and 405 freeways.
From East Victoria Street, enter the campus at Tamcliff Avenue-Toro Center Drive.
