Scholarships and After-5-Attire Mix at Evening of Elegance
Carson, CA-An Evening of Elegance, an after-five-attire affair and a silent auction to raise funds
for the Deborah C. Sears Scholarship Fund, will be held the evening of December 1 by the California
State University, Dominguez Hills Black Faculty and Staff Association at the Carson Community Center.
The Sears Scholarship Fund, which honors the memory of the former professor of psychology and associate
dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (now the College of Liberal Arts), who served CSUDH for 20 years,
was established in 1996, following her death from cancer at age 47. Sears left behind a husband and two
young children.
Tracey Haney, office manager, Academic Programs, and a member of the event’s planning committee, says the
Evening of Elegance is a way to efficiently raise funds for assisting African-American students. According
to Haney, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised so far for the scholarships. Three $1,000 scholarships
are being awarded this year to students who showed scholastic excellence and outstanding service to CSU Dominguez
Hills and the local community. A scholarship committee chooses the Sears Scholarship recipients based on an
essay by the students, their community and campus service, and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Undergraduate students from
any discipline are eligible.
This year, the recipients are Heidi Martin, junior, Africana Studies/Psychology; Tamanika Ferguson, senior,
Africana Studies; and LeTresse Trahan, sophomore, Behavioral Science. They will be acknowledged during the Evening
of Elegance.
The evening will begin with no-host cocktails at 7 o’clock in the Rancho Dominguez Room, followed by dinner at
7:30. Dancing will begin at 9. The Carson Community Center is at 3 Civic Center Plaza.
Tickets are $75 per person; $65 for Black Faculty and Staff Association members; and $650 for a table of 10.
There are no refunds. Those who cannot attend can still send donations. Cash, checks payable to CSUDH Foundation,
Visa, and MasterCard are acceptable. Seating is limited and reservations are required.
