Cal State Dominguez Hills Theatre
Arts Department
Announces its 2007-2008 Theater Season
Carson, CA –The
California State University, Dominguez Hills Department of
Theatre Arts has come up with an ambitious program for its
2007-2008 season, starting with Lorraine Hansberry’s “A
Raisin in the Sun” and ending with possibly the boldest
anti-war play ever written, the 411 B.C. Greek comedy “Lysistrata.”
The season begins Oct. 12 with “A Raisin in the Sun,” directed
by Donis Leonard, associate professor of theater arts. Taking
her title from Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem,” playwright
Lorraine Hansberry shines the theater’s floodlights
on the issue of racism in America and how it affects the
dreams and lives of African Americans. The play runs through
Oct. 21 and takes place in the university’s intimate
Edison Studio Theatre.
Next up is the Nov. 9 premiere of
an original CSU Dominguez Hills play, “The Little College on a Hill.” Two
CSUDH alumnae, Brenda Killian and Naomi Buckley, culled through
hours of interviews with past and present students, faculty
and staff to pen this play that tells the story of Cal State
Dominguez Hills. Directed by Bill DeLuca, professor of theater
arts, the play focuses on the connections between education
and the real world. It is the second production of the recently
formed Dominguez Bridge Theatre Company, which is committed
to producing community-related theater throughout the South
Bay. “The Little College on a Hill” runs through
Nov. 18 and will be performed in the University Theatre.
In the spring, the season continues
with the department’s
One-Act Play Festival from Feb. 22 to March 2. The festival
showcases student works.
The season ends with the production
of Greek playwright Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata.” With the message ‘make
love, not war,’ the play centers on Lysistrata as she
leads a sex strike with other women in town in an attempt
to convince their husbands to end what the women consider
to be a senseless war. “Lysistrata” has been
adapted numerous times during the 20th and 21st centuries
and has been performed throughout the country most recently
in reaction to the Iraq War. The CSUDH production, directed
by visiting director Marla Gam-Hudson, runs from April 18
to 27 in the University Theatre.
All performances take place weekends,
with Friday and Saturday shows at 8 p.m. and Sunday shows
at 2 p.m. Individual ticket
prices are $12 or $10 for students and senior citizens. Group
rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Season subscriptions
