Kenneth Trevett To Serve As First
Distinguished Speaker
Of New College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences Series
Carson, CA –Kenneth
P. Trevett, J.D., president and CEO of the Los Angeles Biomedical
Research Institute (LA BioMed) at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center,
will be the featured speaker at the College of Natural and
Behavioral Sciences inaugural Distinguished Speakers Series
Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 12.
The buffet luncheon will take place
from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Loker Student Union on
the campus of California
State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). A question-and-answer
session will follow Trevett’s speech.
Trevett, who has served in administrative
and legal leadership positions in several not-for-profit
research institutions,
will address the luncheon's audience on "The Academic
Biomedical Research Enterprise: Ethical and Organizational
Perspectives." Part of his responsibilities in these
organizations has been to manage technology transfer relationships
between industrial and academic organizations.
“Ken Trevett was a natural choice for our first Distinguished
Speaker Series, as he is an important and respected participant
in the Southern California biomedical community,” said
Charles Hohm, dean of the college. “The College of
Natural and Behavioral Sciences at CSUDH is striving to become
more involved in the local biomedical community, and Ken
Trevett and LA BioMed have been extremely cooperative with
our faculty and students, and this support is very much appreciated.”
As CEO of LA BioMed, Trevett oversees one of the largest
independent biomedical research organizations in the country,
with 150 principal investigators and a budget of over $75
million. The organization is also a leader in training future
scientists, several of whom come from CSU Dominguez Hills.
For the last several years, LA BioMed and the College of
Natural and Behavioral Sciences have worked closely together,
partnering on prestigious grants and federally funded training
programs such as the Minority Biomedical Research Support
(MBRS) Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)
program that provides students with real world research experience.
Trevett joined LA BioMed in 2001, bringing with him more
than 25 years of experience as an administrator and legal
counsel in biomedical research/education/clinic service institutions.
He has taught and lectured extensively in the field of academic-industry
technology transfer and has authored a CD-ROM on the licensing
of academic technology. He also serves on the board of the
Southern California Biomedical Council and on the Executive
Committee of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation,
positions which further his commitment to strengthening the
academic and commercial biomedical enterprise.
“Los Angeles County has 25 academic organizations
with active biomedical science research programs,” Trevett
noted. “These organizations receive nearly $1 billion
in funding from the National Institutes of Health, making
this region one of the most vibrant in the entire United
States for the discovery of new approaches to the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of disease. In addition, there are
nearly 400 medical companies in Los Angeles County alone.
It is our responsibility to nurture this industry here, diversify
our regional economy, and generate new, well-paying jobs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is ideally situated to train new
researchers and research support personnel to meet the needs
of this growing enterprise. LA BioMed is proud to partner
with the university in meeting this important goal.”
The distinguished speakers series was established to highlight
the important work being done in the natural and behavioral
sciences in the Southern California region and the contributions
of the university to those fields. For the first year of
the series, a lunch with a featured speaker will take place
once a semester.
This first luncheon is being sponsored by the Southern California
Biomedical Council, Schools Federal Credit Union and the
Center for Teaching and Learning at CSU Dominguez Hills.
