Award-Winning “Intimate Apparel” Presented by CSUDH Theatre Arts
Carson, CA -
California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) presents “Intimate Apparel,”
a story of African Americans in turn-of-the-century New York City and their determination
to find love and happiness. Written by Lynn Nottage, the play has won several national awards,
including the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for
Best Play of 2004.
Set in 1905 Manhattan, the plot of “Intimate Apparel” centers around Esther, a lonely seamstress
who creates lingerie for women of different backgrounds. She falls in love with a handsome laborer
from Barbados, who woos her through a series of letters. Her life becomes more complicated when her
friendship with a shy Jewish fabric merchant starts to grow in unexpected ways.
Joyce Johnson, emeritus professor of English and coordinator, Honors Program, plays the role of
Mrs. Dickson, the owner of a boarding house.
“Like all of us, the characters have their personal American dream,” she says. “But in trying
to reach those dreams, they find constraints, and that their class, race, and gender can stand
in the way of achieving those dreams.”
“Intimate Apparel” is directed by Bill DeLuca, chair, Theatre Arts. The cast of six includes
CSUDH alumna Shonni Johnson and Compton resident Theodore Mark. The play opens on Friday, Feb. 16,
and ends on Sunday, March 4, with performances on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m., and Sunday
