FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CSU Dominguez Hills Spanish Professor
Honored at International Conference

(Carson, CA) Dr. Juana Arancibia, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Foreign Languages at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), was recently honored with the Victoria Urbano Prize for Academic Recognition at the 17th annual conference of the Asociación Internacional de Literatura y Cultura Femenia Hispánica (AILCFH).

The Victoria Urbano Prize is named in honor of the woman who founded the association in 1974 and is presented to individuals who seek, as Urbano did during her life, to bring greater recognition to Hispanic literature, particularly women’s literature. In addition to establishing the AILCFH, Urbano also was a writer and poet herself and taught at Lamar University in Texas. She died in 1984.

“For me it's an honor to have achieved this recognition. I don't have words to express my feelings of gratitude in this moment,” Arancibia said in Spanish during her acceptance speech at the conference.

A part-time Spanish professor at CSUDH for more than 20 years, Arancibia is the founder and president of the Instituto Literario y Cultural Hispánico (ILCH), a nonprofit based in Westminster, Calif., whose mission is to unite the Hispanic world through its literature and culture. To that end, ILCH annually produces the literary journal Alba de América, which has been recognized for its excellence in literary-cultural criticism and literature. Arancibia serves as its editor. The institute also is the organizing body of the Simposio Internacional de Literatura, a literary symposium on Hispanic literature that has been held all over the world, and six women’s conferences entitled Mejur y Sociedad en América. In August 2008, the 30th annual symposium will be in Port Alegre, Brazil. It is being co-sponsored by the CSU Dominguez Hills foreign language department, which has been a sponsor for the past 10 years.

“Victoria Urbano was my inspiration when I decided to found the ILCH in 1979 so I’m doubly thankful,” Arancibia continued in her acceptance speech. “That inspiration that I once felt helped me accomplish everything that has been done in these 28 years.”
