(Carson, CA)— The
California State University, Dominguez Hills Department of Theatre
Arts is pleased to present the classic Greek comedy by Aristophanes, “Lysistrata.” The
final play of the 2007-08 season, “Lysistrata” opens
April 18 and continues through April 27.
Possibly the boldest antiwar play ever
written, “Lysistrata” tells
the story of women in ancient Athens and Sparta who join together
to withhold their “offerings” from their men until
they stop a senseless war. In the satiric universe of Aristophanes,
everything is turned upside down, but the message of the play—make
love, not war!—extends far beyond 5th century B.C. The CSUDH
Department of Theatre Arts’ version will be set in more modern
times, 1965 Las Vegas against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
“How timely for our department to be making an antiwar statement
right now with the country debating Iraq in our presidential race,” said
Sydell Weiner, chair of the department.
“The anti-Vietnam music is relatable to our audience, plus
the setting of Caesar’s Palace still has that Greek/Roman
of the original play,” says director Marla Gam-Hudson, visiting
professor of theatre arts and a CSUDH alumna who has more than
30 years of experience as an actress, director and acting coach
with Southern California theater groups.
Leading the cast are students Amber Jackson, LaNeisha McKnight,
Mallory Kerwin, Ashley Ferguson, Geraldine Gomez, Glen Jimenez,
Percy Arcibal, Corey Cohen, Taka Miki, Tabitha Ayou, Candice Bouttie,
Hollie Jagen, Erin Adams, Juanita Aaron, Mauricio Amaral, Chrisgen
Whitfield, and a chorus of outrageous women.
Performances will take place two weekends only, April 18 and 19
and April 25-27, with Friday and Saturday shows at 8 p.m. The Sunday,
April 27, show will be at 2 p.m.
Individual ticket prices are $12 or $10
for students and senior citizens. Special group rates are available
for groups of 10 or
more. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at (310)
243-3589. Online ticket purchasing is also available at www.zaptix.com (browse “California”).
