Tamcliff/Toro Center Drive at Victoria Street
(Carson, CA)— California
State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is one of the most ethnically
diverse universities in the West, and to celebrate that diversity
the university each year hosts Unity Fest, a two-day arts and cultural
festival. This year’s festivities will take place on Thursday,
April 17, and Saturday, April 19, in the campus’ Sculpture
Garden located adjacent to the University Theatre off Toro Center
Drive. All activities and entertainment are free and the public
is invited to attend.
A varied line-up of live entertainment
and a host of activities are slated throughout the two days of
Unity Fest 2008: Celebration
of CSUDH Cultures and Communities. On Thursday, April 17, the performances
includes belly dancers at noon, Brazilian dancers at 1 p.m., Latino
rock musician Malku at 2 p.m., African dancers at 3 p.m., and hip-hop
singer E-Reece at 3:30 p.m. Headlining the afternoon at 4:15 p.m.
will be Medusa, the “Gangsta Goddess.”
The Saturday schedule of performers includes the Joe May Orchestra
at 11 a.m., flamenco dancers at noon, Polynesian dancers at 1 p.m.,
the Gypsy Blues Band at 2 p.m., the Hip Hop Kids at 2:30 p.m. and
at 3:20 p.m., Quinto Sol, a roots-reggae band with Latin rhythms,
will be the headline act.
Each day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. a children’s
village will provide a place where children can participate in
games, crafts
and other fun. All around the Sculpture Garden, food stations will
be selling international dishes, vendors will be selling their
cultural wares, and clubs and organizations from CSU Dominguez
Hills will be highlighting what they have to offer.
Unity Fest events on Saturday are part
of the university’s
annual Open House, A Day At Dominguez, which will take place from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Middle and high school students and their families,
as well as transfer students and adults interested in returning
to school are invited to tour the campus and learn about the programs
offered. On-site admissions are even offered to eligible prospective
students. For more information on A Day At Dominguez, visit www.csudh.edu/outreach/dayatdominguez.html.
“Local residents who visit the campus during Unity Fest
and A Day at Dominguez will quickly see that multiculturalism is
embraced at Dominguez Hills,” said Lui Amador, director of
the Multicultural Center at CSUDH. “And honestly, it’s
not something relegated to one or two days. With such a diverse
student body, the exchange of ideas and sharing of different viewpoints
and cultures that naturally occurs in a university setting is heightened
here and occurs throughout the year.”
For the past several years, CSU Dominguez
Hills has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as having
one of the most diverse student populations of any four-year
university of its size west
of the Mississippi River. The demographics of the student body
mirror the multicultural society of the region, with 39.7% Hispanic,
31.1% African American, 18.2% white, 10.6% Asian, and .4% American
Indian. International students at the university represent more
than 90 countries.
Unity Fest 2008 is co-sponsored by the CSUDH Associated Students,
Inc., the Loker Student Union, the CSUDH Multicultural Center,
Office of Student Life, Toro Productions and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
