CSU Dominguez Hills to Host 37th Congressional District’s Annual High School Art Competition

(Carson, CA)— California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has been chosen by Congresswoman Laura Richardson (D-CA) to host “An Artistic Discovery,” the annual Congressional Art Competition for the 37th Congressional District. The event will take place in the University Art Gallery on Friday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m.

“We are very excited that Dominguez Hills is hosting Rep. Richardson’s first Congressional Art Competition,” said David Gamboa, director of Government and Community Relations at CSUDH. “Her selection of our campus for this event is a testament to her support of our university. The exhibit should be a wonderful showcase of the talent of our local high school students, many of whom will hopefully become future Toros.”

Each spring, a nationwide high school art competition is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of high school students throughout the United States. All high schools in the 37th Congressional District, covering Carson, Compton, Signal Hill and portions of Long Beach and Los Angeles, were invited to enter student artwork in the contest. Nearly two dozen entries will be on display in the University Art Gallery on April 25. A panel of judges will select the winning piece, which will be sent to Washington D.C. to be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will also include artwork from other congressional districts’ contest winners.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

This event is open to the public and parents are encouraged to bring their children to view the various works that will be displayed. The student artwork will only be exhibited that evening.

CSU Dominguez Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria St., in Carson. The University Art Gallery is on the main floor of the university’s LaCorte Hall. Visitor parking is permitted in all campus lots with a valid parking pass. Day passes are $3 and available at the yellow dispensing machines at the perimeter of each campus lot.
