CLARIFICATION ---
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In the release below,
California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) announces
that prospective
first-time freshman and some
transfer students wanting to enroll at the campus for fall 2008
needed to submit applications by March 1. This deadline is an extension
to the California State University (CSU) systemwide plan to close
enrollment for students at CSU campuses on Feb. 1, in response
to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2008-2009 budget proposal
that cut $312.9 million from the California State University.
CSUDH and six other campuses that have been short of enrollment
targets in recent years were given a March 1 extension to better
aid them in meeting their targets under this tightened deadline.
The other campuses are CSU Los Angeles, East Bay, San Bernardino,
Sacramento, Bakersfield and Monterey Bay.
While some CSUs aren’t affected by
the new Feb. 1 deadline because their application period has
already closed, CSUDH is among
the CSU campuses that typically allow students to apply through
the summer.
Fall Enrollment for First-Time
Freshmen to Close
March 1 at CSU Dominguez Hills
Student access threatened by state budget proposal -- University
urges
prospective students to apply for admission before deadline
(Carson,
CA) – Freshman-level
students wanting to attend California State University,
Dominguez Hills in the fall must submit their applications
by March 1. After that, enrollment will be closed to first-time
freshmen and some transfer students under a systemwide
mandate imposed by Charles B. Reed, chancellor of the California
State University.
Early enrollment deadlines for CSU
campuses were set in response to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget
proposal that would cut $312.9 million from the CSU budget
for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. The proposed budget would
fail to fund access for 10,000 CSU students — the number
CSU had expected to grow by in the coming year — and
$36 million in mandatory costs, including employee health
benefits and compensation agreements for CSU faculty and
staff.
CSU Dominguez Hills President Mildred
García and
other CSU presidents met with Chancellor Reed last week to
discuss a plan for enrollment management. That plan calls
for earlier enrollment deadlines and all CSU enrollment targets
for the 2008-09 academic year to remain the same as the current
academic year.
The majority of prospective students from local high schools
submit applications to CSU Dominguez Hills well before March
1; however, such a deadline could have an impact on the returning
adult students and underrepresented populations served by
this campus. Because these individuals have so many demands
on their lives, they tend to enroll later in the year. With
the tenuous budget situation, the university encourages all
potential students to submit their applications immediately.
“We understand that these are difficult budget times,” said
García. “However, limiting our ability to enroll
a diverse student body will have a direct impact on the local
economy and workforce. The South Bay community relies on
Dominguez Hills to prepare its teachers, nurses, business
and technology graduates, and other industry professionals.
“In addition, we have seen
an increase in enrollment of students from Hispanic and
African American communities
in recent years and the proposed budget cuts could have long-term
repercussions on the gains that CSU Dominguez Hills and the
CSU system have made in helping underserved students go to
college. As we face these fiscal and enrollment challenges,
we will continue to ensure that we provide a quality education
to every student who wants to attend our University.”
The overall impact of the proposed
budget on CSU Dominguez Hills is still unknown and likely
will not be fully known
until late spring, as the budget makes its way through the
legislature. The budget process includes the release of a
budget analysis by the Legislative Analyst’s Office
in February and the governor’s May revised budget based
on the forecast of state revenues at that time. Following
legislative approval, the governor is scheduled to approve
the budget by July 1.
“We should remember that the governor’s proposed
January budget is just the opening salvo in a very long and
highly political budget process. It is, by no means, what
the final budget will be,” said David Bradfield, California
Faculty Association president, CSU Dominguez Hills Chapter,
and professor of music. “The proposed budget would
hamstring Dominguez Hill's ability to provide every eligible
student a quality, affordable education. The California Faculty
Association will be working very hard with our strategic
allies to come up with a better solution for California’s
budget problems. We invite students, faculty, staff, and
the community to join with us in that effort.”
Dr. Gayle Ball-Parker, director of University Outreach,
urges interested students to submit applications now.
“Prospective students can apply to Dominguez Hills
at the CSU online application website, CSUMentor.edu,” Ball-Parker
said, “While some of the other CSUs have already closed
enrollment for the fall, our campus will still admit first-time
freshmen up until the March 1 deadline. Those who may have
already applied to other CSU campuses can easily add Dominguez
Hills to their online application.”

freshmen must apply online at www.csumentor.edu by 11:59
p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008.
CSU Dominguez Hills will continue
to accept applications after March 1 from eligible upper-division
transfer students,
out-of-state and international students, credential candidates
and graduate students. Eligible transfer students need to
have completed 60 or more transferable semester units and
the “golden four” general education requirements
(speech, English, critical thinking and college level math). The chancellor’s plan will
not affect enrollment for the spring semester that begins
January 26, or the summer
semester. Students interesting in attending CSU Dominguez
Hills are urged to visit www.csudh.edu.
