Long Beach Architecture Exhibit
at University Art Gallery
Early Long Beach Architecture,
Feb. 6 – March 5, 2008
Opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m.,
Feb. 6 in the University Art Gallery. Dr. Louise Ivers,
CSUDH
professor of art and the exhibit’s guest curator, will
lead guests on a tour of the exhibit at 6 p.m.
Carson, CA –Early
Long Beach Architecture, curated by Dr. Louise Ivers, professor
of art at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH),
will open at the CSUDH University Art Gallery on Feb. 6,
2008, and continue through March 5.
The
exhibit will feature the works of California architects
Henry F. Starbuck, Robert
F. Train, Robert E. Williams, J. Cather Newsom, Garrett
and Bixby, and John C. Austin represented in historic postcards,
incisive contemporary photographs by Dr. Ivers, and luminous
watercolor paintings by Long Beach artist Carl Aldana.
The
exhibit will include photographs and historic images of
a number of turn-of-the-century buildings, including the
DeCoudres
house on Long Beach Boulevard, the First National Bank
by Train and Williams, the first Masonic Temple by Henry
Starbuck,
many homes in Willmore City, Long Beach’s original
name, and others on Cedar and Chestnut Avenues in downtown
Long Beach.
The
opening reception for Early Long Beach Architecture will
take place on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. in
the University Art Gallery. In conjunction with the opening,
Dr. Ivers will lead a gallery tour at 6 p.m. The exhibition
is the fifth in a series on Long Beach architecture curated
by Dr. Ivers, an expert on historic Long Beach architecture,
and presented by the University Art Gallery. Her other exhibitions
include: Modernistic Architecture in Long Beach, 1928-1937
(1985); Cecil Schilling: Jazz Age Architect (1994); Hugh
Davies: Architect and Innovator (2002); and An Architectural
Stylist: W. Horace Austin and Eclecticism in California (2005).
Admission
to the gallery and related events is free. The gallery
is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through
Thursday,
and is in La Corte Hall A-107.
CSU Dominguez
Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria St. in Carson, near the junction
of the Harbor, Artesia
and San
Diego freeways. Visitor parking permits may be purchased
for $3 at the yellow dispensing machines at the front
of each campus lot.

About
the University Art Gallery -- The University
Art Gallery opened in 1978 and is considered one
of the major
exhibition spaces in the South Bay. The gallery
supports and enhances the Art Department's instructional
program while giving students from all disciplines and
interested community members a valuable opportunity to
explore and experience contemporary and historical works
of art from many cultures. The gallery has over 2,000
square feet of exhibition space and 18' high ceilings,
and it can accommodate large-scale paintings and sculptures
by artists of local and national reputation. There are
five exhibitions a year, the last being a multimedia
show of works by graduating seniors in the Art Department.
