FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CSU Dominguez Hills Begins State Budget Closure Days Schedule
Campus will be closed Friday, August 14 and 21

(Carson, CA) – The California State University, Dominguez Hills campus will be closed the next two Fridays, Aug. 14 and 21, as part of a yearlong employee furlough plan to help bridge a $21.2 million gap to the university’s budget, its portion of the $564 million cut in state funding to the CSU system.

In July, the majority of the employee unions within the CSU voted to furlough themselves between 18 and 24 days from August 2009 to June 2010 – and take a nearly 10% reduction in their monthly paychecks – in an effort to help address the massive state budget cut to the system while still preserving as many jobs as possible. More than 85 percent of the CSU budget goes toward employee salary and benefits, and two furloughs a month is expected to reduce salary expenditures systemwide by as much as $274 million.

From now through June 2010, CSU Dominguez Hills will operate on a shortened work week for a total of 18 weeks, the majority of which will occur in the spring semester. In an attempt to reduce the impact on students, in several cases these days occur during times when classes are not in session but which normally would have been work days for employees, such as a student holiday, winter break, spring break or after the semester is over. Otherwise the state budget closure days will occur during a non-holiday week.

On the state budget closure days, all campuses services—from the admission’s office and financial aid to the library and gymnasium, as well as all administrative and academic department offices—will be closed. Only university police and student housing staff will be on duty.

Given the class schedule, as well as a number of events, had already been planned prior to the decision to implement furloughs, CSU Dominguez Hills officials devised a fall semester furlough schedule that limits the number of full state budget closure days. The campus will not be open Aug 14, Aug. 21, Nov. 27 (the day after Thanksgiving) and Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.  For the remainder of the fall semester, staff and the administration will alternate furlough days (a total of six) in order to keep the campus operational.

For spring, university officials revised the course schedule and eliminated Friday classes. The majority of state budget closure days in spring will occur on Fridays. A total of 14 days have been designated as state budget closure days January through June.
