(Carson, CA) – On Monday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m., 55th District Assemblymember Warren T. Furutani (D-South Los Angeles County), along with members of the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus and other local officials, community groups and labor unions, will hold a press conference at California State University, Dominguez Hills to announce local efforts to assist the islands of American Samoa & Samoa on their road to recovery after the earthquake and tsunami that hit the islands on Sept. 29.  Monetary, food and durable goods contributions will be accepted to benefit the “Help Samoa Relief Project” following the press conference until 1:30 p.m.

“This island and its people need our help and support due to the devastating effects of the tsunami that hit the islands recently. On Monday, I am hosting a donation drive and will present a monetary contribution from my colleagues and me to help ease the destruction that the people of America Samoa are facing,” said Furutani.  “While this may be only one small step on their way to recovery, ensuring that they have the resources to begin to rebuild is critical, so please visit www.helpsamoa.com to find a list of goods that are needed.”

Families within the 55th Assembly District were also hit hard by the tsunami. This District is home to one of the nation’s largest Samoan populations outside of the Pacific where numerous Samoan community groups can be found throughout West Long Beach and Carson.

CSU Dominguez Hills, which has a number of Samoan students, staff and alumni, began collecting donations the morning following the tsunami. The university also set up a call center for family here to connect with family on the islands, provided counseling services, and alerted students to emergency financial aid loan opportunities.
