(Carson, CA) – The Center for Service Learning, Internships and Civic Engagement (SLICE) at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) will be hosting a Community Town Hall to assess community-based needs as a direct result of the economic crisis on Saturday, Nov. 7 from noon to 3:30 p.m. in the Claudia Hampton Hall located in the Welch Hall building on campus.

The afternoon will include local leaders and representatives of various organizations speaking on ways they are helping the community, as well as a panel discussion titled “Why We Need Direct Government Job Creation Now: Lessons from the Past” lead by Dr. Frank Stricker, CSUDH emeritus professor of history and author of “Why America Lost the War on Poverty, and How to Win It,” The format will allow for members of the community to offer their perspective on issues of food, security, housing/shelter and financial literacy. Speakers scheduled to attend to-date include Carson Councilman Mike Gibson and representatives from JusticeCorps and Habitat for Humanity.

Organizers hope the town hall provides a frank and informative discussion of the needs of the community and helps foster collaborations between the university and the community that work toward finding solutions. The community can also have their voices heard by responding to a survey at www.csudh.edu/csl/survey.

The town hall is free to attend, but the community is asked to RSVP by October 31. Lunch will be provided. To RSVP, visit www.csudh.edu/csl or call (310) 243-2438.

The event is sponsored by SLICE through a grant from the California State University Office of the Chancellor, and support from the CSUDH Office of Student Life, University Advancement, Office of Ceremonies and Events, the Urban Community Research Center, Office of Government and Community Relations.

The Claudia Hampton Hall is located on the lower level of the James Welch Hall building near the corner of Victoria Street and Toro Center Drive. Parking permits are $4 and can be purchased at yellow kiosk machines near each lot.
