Day With Dominguez: Long Beach City College Gets the Toro Touch

On March 7, members of the Outreach and Recruitment Task Force (ORTF) visited Long Beach City College (LBCC) to recruit transfer students with “Day with Dominguez: Come and Explore the Opportunities.” Vice Provost Jamie Dote-Kwan, Academic Affairs, describes the event as “a presence at our major feeding community colleges.  It provides an opportunity to meet and talk to hundreds of potential students, as well as the faculty and administrators at the community colleges.”

“Day with Dominguez” will be made available to El Camino Community College; Cerritos College; Long Beach City College; Los Angeles Harbor College; Compton Community College; and Los Angeles Southwest College, CSUDH’s main feeder campuses. The ORTF, which is chaired by Dote-Kwan, are Gayle Ball Parker, director, University Outreach and Information Services; Charles Hohm, dean, College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences; Don Manning, junior (Business Administration) and upper division representative, Associated Students, Inc.; Keisha Paxton, assistant professor of psychology; Laura Robles, acting dean, Graduate Studies and Research; Mary Ann Rodriguez, associate vice president, Administration and Finance; Sean Sather-Wagstaff, assistant professor of mathematics; and Yvette Velarde, coordinator, Academic Facilities and Class Schedule, Academic Affairs.

Dote-Kwan commends the various CSUDH teams, comprised of faculty, administrators, alumni, and students, for “presenting ‘our story’ to more than 250 students, either by talking to them in their classes or during the college fair portion of the day.”

Participating members of the ORTF at LBCC that day were Dote-Kwan; Parker; Rodriguez; and Velarde. Accompanying them were John Keyantash, assistant professor of earth sciences; Carol Tubbs, acting associate dean, College of Liberal Arts; James Strong, dean, College of Business and Public Policy (CBAPP); Jeff Badrtalei, associate dean, CBAPP; Albert Carpenter, coordinator, Business Advisement and Student Services; Raoul Freeman, chair and professor, Computer Information Systems; Roger Berry, professor and chair, Marketing and Management; Kim Trimble, associate professor of teacher education;
Joi Dudley
, administrative coordinator, Academic Programs; Kim Clark, director, University Student Union; Angela Barron, sophomore (Liberal Studies) and administrative assistant, Academic Affairs; and Randy Zarn, associate vice president, Student Life and vice president, Student Affairs.

The day’s events began with a general meeting of students, counselors, faculty, and department chairs, and presentations that offered facts and testimonies from CSUDH representatives with a “Why Come to Dominguez Hills” theme, followed by a question and answer period. Recruiting materials such as transfer roadmaps, viewbooks, university catalogs, and information on graduate programs were distributed. Other services offered were presentations given in individual classrooms, meetings with CSUDH deans and faculty, pre-admission advising, and on-site admissions. LBCC student Andrew Kiddoo was the first student to be admitted at a “Day with Dominguez.”

The ORTF is part of the Enrollment Management Policy Council (EMPC), which includes three other task forces on retention, publications and image, and advisement.
