Lynne Cook: Group Effort

Lynne Cook, dean, College of Education, will be co-teaching “Advanced Consultation, Collaboration and Communication” with Adriean Mancillas, assistant professor of graduate education, and DeAnna Hurley Chamberlain, a graduate student from the University of North Carolina. An internationally renowned expert in the area of teacher collaboration, Cook and her team will instruct master's of education students in a growing field.

Rod Hernandez: Making History Through Mentoring

When Rod Hernandez, assistant professor of English, introduces The Squatter and the Don in his classes, he does more than teach the first novel written by a Mexican American in the United States. Written by Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton in 1885, the historical work of fiction mirrors the story of the Dominguez family that settled the area surrounding the CSU Dominguez Hills campus, which originally was comprised of 75,000 acres that make up the South Bay region. Hernandez hopes to make local history as the new president of the Latino Faculty and Staff Association on campus.

Lisa Hutton: History Repeats
Itself – For Good

Lisa Hutton is working to keep history from repeating itself in underserved elementary and high school classrooms in the Lynwood Unified School District. As the CSU Dominguez Hills/CSU Long Beach site director of the federally-funded California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP), she is training teachers to better present history lessons, while imparting literacy skills that will encourage their students to attend – and stay in – college.
