| New COE Associate Dean Brings USC, Getty Experience to CSUDH
Lynn O’Leary-Archer brings her extensive experience from the University of Southern California,
where she administered a budget of more than $23 million and 170 employees, and the J. Paul Getty Trust,
where she administered a budget of more than $21 million and was overseer of managerial staff and
departments, to the position of associate dean of the College of Education (COE) at California State University,
Dominguez Hills.
COE educates and certifies students for the teaching professions. Nearly every school
in every school district in the greater Los Angeles area, as well as in many schools in Southern California,
has at least one teacher or administrator who received education from CSUDH.
COE Dean Lynne Cook says what interested her most about O’Leary-Archer is “her extensive
experience in management, organizational development, and budgetary matters. They constitute a valuable
skill set and needed expertise that will help us move the college to the next level of excellence.
“Her intellectual and scholarly interests are more closely aligned with our Liberal Studies program,” Cook continues, “and there is widespread agreement here that she has the insight and energy to help us strengthen
and expand this essential component, along with the rest of the college.”
O’Leary-Archer said she has spoken with Cook a number of times and, although she hasn’t yet reported in,
she says she feels she knows the areas where she will be put to use: “Lynne Cook has ambitious plans for the
College of Education. My major
focus is to assure that the college is very responsive to the students. The dean doesn’t
want becoming a teacher to be impeded in any way, and, being in charge of student services, I’ll have a role in that.
“Also,” the new associate dean adds, “I believe the College of Education will be putting more emphasis on fund
raising and increasing the profile of the college nationally, so I think I’ll become a sort of ‘Jill of all
trades’ to free others up to do that."
At USC, O’Leary-Archer’s extensive experience included her position as the executive director of the Resources
and Services/Archival Research Center in the Information Services Division, as well as the director of libraries.
She represented USC nationally and internationally as the library director. She was overseer of five large
interdisciplinary libraries dedicated to research collections, collections in the social sciences, sciences and
engineering, East Asian materials, and undergraduate learning; seven smaller subject-specific branches; and two
off-site storage/public access facilities.
At The Getty, O’Leary-Archer was the associate director from 1994 to 1998 of the Getty Research Institute for
the History of Art and the Humanities. She was also on the executive team in an advanced research institute in
the visual arts and humanities, with a large research library, visiting scholars program, conferences and seminars,
programs in publications and exhibitions, and collaborative programming with other Los Angeles community and
cultural organizations.
Prior to her work at The Getty, the O’Leary-Archer was in her first stint at USC, as an assistant dean for planning
and administration in the Division of Social Sciences and Communication in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
O’Leary-Archer has given a number of presentations on libraries, including on new technology; has been a board member,
committee member, and participant in a number of professional organizations; and has taught and lectured on men,
women, and family in American culture.
O’Leary-Archer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history at Gonzaga University in Spokane,
Washington; her Master of Arts degree in American Studies from USC; and her Ph.D. in History from USC.
