Congresswoman Millender-McDonald to Host Election Assistance Commission Town Hall on CSUDH Campus

On Monday, September 18, Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, ranking member on the Committee on House Administration, will host a comprehensive discussions of procedures, requirements and regulations on federal elections at the University Theater on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. In anticipation of the November mid-term elections, this town hall meeting will inform citizens of safeguards that protect their ballots on Election Day and inform them of their rights.

As the lead Democrat on federal elections, the Congresswoman has invited the Elections Assistance Commission (EAC), to participate in this important discussion. The EAC is a national clearing house and resource for information and review of federal election procedures.

“This event is the first of more to come on this critical issue," says the Congresswoman. "I will continue to work to ensure that every eligible ballot cast is counted and that citizens know their rights. I've met with Mayors, election officers, and major national organizations from across the country to exchange ideas and strategies about what must be done to curtail voter fraud, manipulation, or intimidation."

Conny McCormack, Los Angeles County registrar-recorder and county clerk and other local officials will discuss Los Angeles County’s recent initiatives, including the implementation of security, reliability, and accessibility standards for electronic voting machines; voter registration outreach efforts; and poll worker recruitment. Sample forms and voting equipment will be available for demonstration purposes and audience participation.

Earlier this year, Millender-McDonald sent a letter to several of the nation’s governors reminding them that the implementation of provisional ballot voting, and the new requirements for first-time voters, were to be in place by January 2004. In addition, improved access for disabled voters, updating of the statewide voter registration lists, and elimination of antiquated voting machines, became effective in January 2006.

“My concern is that the HAVA (Help America Vote Act of 2002) provisions have not been adhered to and that several states remain out of compliance,” Millender-McDonald says. “As the ranking member of the committee that has oversight
of federal elections, I feel that governors and state legislators must do everything necessary to become compliant with this legislation.”

The Theatre is located east of Toro Center Drive, between parking lots 3 and 6. Lots 3 and 6 are accessible from the Tamcliff Street-Toro Center Drive entrance from East Victoria Street, off Avalon Boulevard between the 91 and 405
freeways, and accessible from the 190th Street exit from the 110 Freeway. The University is at 1000 East Victoria Street in Carson.
