Team Effort: New Intramural Sports Program
at CSUDH

Dominguez Hills Intramurals, the first such sports program on the CSUDH campus, is being launched this fall, offering busy students the opportunity to participate in competitive sports without the commitment of joining an intercollegiate team.

George Wing, who is retiring from the position of head coach of baseball, will serve as the new program’s director.

“We want to drum up more campus life with the student population,” he says. “The administration really wants to see an increase in campus life here. Intramurals are a vehicle to give students the opportunity to compete in a flag football league or a basketball league. A lot of our students have children, or have to work, or other
demands away from school. This is one way to motivate them to get involved, get to know other students, and create a social atmosphere at the University.”

The fall schedule includes basketball, flag football, and twilight golf, which will be held at the Dominguez Hills Golf Course at 19800 Main Street in Carson. Students will begin to meet on September 13 to form their own teams and receive information on the venues to be used for the various activities, in South Academic Complex, Room 1101 at the scheduled class times. Faculty and staff can sign up for intramurals through the College of Extended Education, with a $10 fee.

The intramural program falls under the division of Kinesiology and Recreation, in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). Mitch Maki, dean, CHHS, emphasizes the promotion of healthful lifestyles as a central component of
the CHHS mission.

“Through the intramurals program, the College promotes competitive activities that support physical and psychological health and well-being,” he says. “Along with the benefits to the individuals participating, students, faculty, and staff will benefit from the community building effects of a universitywide intramurals program.”

Information and a complete listing of courses will be periodically updated on the program’s Web site at http://www.csudh.edu/hhs/intramural.htm or contact George Wing at (310) 243-2219.
