Alice Workshop Takes Teachers Through the Looking Glass of Programming

Nearly 50 high school teachers and university faculty took part in a free three-day “Learning to Program with Alice” workshop on the California State University, Dominguez Hills campus last weekend. Designed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s Stage 3 Research Group to make learning computer programming easier, Alice — named for the character in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”—uses storytelling and graphics as its instructional focus. Students create animated movies and simple video games and, in the process, learned the basics of computer science and computer programming.

MLB's Urban Youth Academy Puts Aspiring Major Leaguers in the Game

On August 9, representatives from throughout the 37th congressional district paid tribute to the late Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald at a ceremony held at Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Urban Youth Academy. The state-of-the-art facility was a triumph for Millender-McDonald, who convinced MLB executives that the Compton campus, which served her district, was the ideal place for the academy.
