Don Hata: Historian Helped Reveal the Multicultural Origins of Los Angeles Settlers

Los Pobladores, the original settlers of Los Angeles reflected a multicultural and multiethnic mix that has been the legacy of the city from 1781 to the present day. The 226th anniversary of that trek was Sept. 4 this year. Don Hata, emeritus professor of history, shares the story of this surprising discovery and the efforts of his colleagues to bring this knowledge to an often less-than-receptive L.A. during the city's bicentennial.

Photo above: The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) raised more than $1,400 for scholarships at their first casino fundraiser trip to Barona Resort and Casino. The proceeds go to the Deborah Sears Scholarship Fund, named in memory of the former associate dean of the former College of Arts and Sciences (now the College of Arts and Humanities.)

In addition to the Sears scholarship, BFSA raises funds for the Douglas-Bethune Graduation Celebration and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast. The group also supports the Sisterhood of Isis support program for female African American students by providing mentors.
