Cal State Dominguez Hills to Host 55th Assembly District Candidates Forum

On Thursday, Nov. 15, California State University, Dominguez Hills and the Carson Chamber of Commerce will host a 55th Assembly District Candidates Forum with the six candidates seeking the seat. The event will take place from 7 to 9 a.m. in the Claudia Hampton Lecture Hall at Welch Hall.

The 55th Assembly District seat became vacant in August when then-representative Laura Richardson won her bid to represent the 37th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. A special election is scheduled for Dec. 11. If one candidate does not receive a majority of the votes, a general election will take place Feb. 5, 2008.

Vying to represent the cities of Carson, Torrance, Harbor City, Wilmington, Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill in the state Assembly are Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustee Warren Furutani, management consultant Mervin Leon Evans, Carson City Councilman Mike Gipson, Long Beach businesswoman Evelyn D. Robertson, retired aerospace engineer Herb Peters, and Long Beach resident and nurse Charlotte Sadiyah Gibson.

During the forum, the candidates will field questions from members of the audience, who as they arrive will be handed comment cards on which to submit their questions. A continental breakfast will be served at the forum and parking will be free in Lot 3.

The Claudia Hampton Lecture Hall is on the ground floor of Welch Hall, which is located on the campus of CSU Dominguez Hills at Toro Center/Tamcliff Drive and Victoria Street. Parking Lot 3 is adjacent to Welch Hall.
