Susan Johnston and James Cooper: Professional Development of Faculty Leads to Student Success



Susan Johnston, professor of education, and Jim Cooper, director of Network for Cooperative Learning in Higher Education and professor of graduate education, had their article “Supporting Student Success Through Scaffolding” published in a recent issue of Tomorrow’s Professor. The newsletter, an online faculty development publication at Stanford University, has a circulation of approximately 25,000 faculty and administrators at more than 600 campuses.

Laura Robles: Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Appointed to WAGS Executive Committee


Laura Robles, dean of graduate studies and research and professor of biology at California State University, Dominguez Hills, was recently appointed to the executive committee of the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) as a member-at-large for two years. She was designated for this honor at the organization’s annual conference, held March 7-9 in Denver, Colo. and hosted by the University of Denver.

In Memoriam: John A. Brownell (1924-2008)

Dr. John A. Brownell, a past president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, died on Feb. 22 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83. Brownell served as interim president of CSU Dominguez Hills from 1987 to 1989, following the sudden death of Dr. Richard Butwell, who served as president from 1984 to 1987.

Salim Faraji: Professor of Africana Studies Analyzes Politics in Black America


Salim Faraji, assistant professor of Africana studies, co-authored the article, “Breaking With Tradition: Why Two Young African American Professors Support Barack Obama,” which appeared online in January in The Black Commentator In the article, Faraji and his colleague, Jahi Issa, assistant professor of African World History at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, explain their support of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama despite having previously been in line with Civil Rights leaders’ historical support of former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), who is Obama’s opponent.

The Greg Smith Memorial Garden, located in the southwest corner of the Social and Behavioral Sciences building, was dedicated on Feb. 23 with a gathering of the late professor's colleagues, family and friends.
