Sandra Alvarez: The Art of the Matter

On a cold January morning, Sandra Alvarez braved the elements outside Loker Student Union to paint en plein air during an arts and crafts for teachers winter session class. The liberal studies major currently works as an instructional aide at Meyler Street Elementary School in Torrance, and is often in charge of developing art projects for her young students.

Sithea San: Alumna Works to Build Community in Long Beach’s Cambodia Town

As a founder and now chair of the board of directors for the fledgling Cambodia Town ethnic district in Long Beach, Sithea San (Class of ’91, B.S., business administration) continues to live by the words of a professor she fondly remembers from her days at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Kosaku Yoshida, Ph.D., told his finance class that the obstacles throughout the journey are not what matter, but the end result.

Sue Needham: Professor of Anthropology Co-Authors Book on Cambodians in Long Beach

Sue Needham, professor of anthropology at California State University, Dominguez Hills,
co-authored the pictorial history book
Cambodians in Long Beach with Karen Quintiliani, assistant professor of anthropology at CSU Long Beach. The book, whose photographs are culled from the private collections of members of the Cambodian community, is scheduled for publication later this month by Arcadia Publishing, as part of its Images in America series.

Thomas Philo: Staying the Course as a Legacy Runner at the L.A. Marathon

“It’s a good lesson to have a goal and to know that you have to sacrifice certain things for it, that you have to give certain things to achieve it,” says Thomas Philo, archivist and cataloguer at California State University, Dominguez Hills and one of approximately 280 people to have participated in every L.A. Marathon since its inception in 1986 as a Legacy Runner.

Motion Graphics Exhibit Highlights Los Angeles Studios

“Los Angeles Design in Motion: Graphics in Film and Television” opens on March 26 and runs through April 24 at the CSU Dominguez Hills University Art Gallery. The exhibit will feature motion graphics created by six Los Angeles-based design companies, including BeliefDesign, Blind, Colourmovie, Exopolis, Fuel, and Twothousandstrong.
