Amer El-Ahraf: Emeritus Professor of Health Sciences Named President of Association of Egyptian American Scholars

Amer El-Ahraf, emeritus professor of health sciences at California State University, Dominguez Hills, was elected president of the Association of Egyptian American Scholars, an international and interdisciplinary organization whose members include such notable scholars such as Nobel Prize winner Ahmad Zewiel and noted NASA scientist Farouk El-Baz.

A. Marco Turk: Teaching Others to Give Peace a Chance

A. Marco Turk, professor and director of the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding program was honored this spring with Golden West College’s first Peace Award in recognition of his work in helping to establish the Peace Studies program at the Huntington Beach community college. The certified community and trial court mediator contributed to curriculum design for the program, made recommendations for building its faculty, and has been a featured speaker at the program’s annual conference for the last three years.

In Memoriam: Donn Silvis (1942-2008)

Professor of communications Donn Silvis died last week at the age of 66 from upper
respiratory issues on May 31. A public relations professional who led his own firm,
Silvis Communications for ten years, he brought his professional experience to the classroom, as well as a supportive and mentoring relationship to his students even after they graduated.

Photo above: The late Donn Silvis (1942-2008) was honored at the 2006 Undergraduate Commencement with the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award. The professor and former chair of communications was stricken with respiratory disease in the middle of the semester in 2005, but continued to conduct his classes and work with his students by phone and email from home.
