Presidential Scholars: President García Welcomes Students to Select Cohort


On Oct. 17, President Mildred García hosted an afternoon tea reception for the 2008 Presidential Scholarship recipients, at her residence in the University House. The scholars, who range from incoming freshmen, to returning college students at California State University, Dominguez Hills, were also received by university administration and deans, who extended their congratulations, advice and support to the students and their guests.

Transition to Teaching: College of Education Program Trains Teachers for Hard-to-Staff Schools

Kamal Hamdan, director of the Transition to Teaching program in the College of Education, is on a mission to recruit teachers for hard-to-staff schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. His prospects range from incoming freshmen to returning students at California State University, Dominguez Hills, all of whom have the skills and passion to teach math, science or English in inner city schools. Another quality that is common among these students is that they would be teaching in the very schools they came from.

Both Sides Now: Student Forum Informs the Campus on State Measures


Students in a state and local government class presented a forum on the California ballot measures in the Loker Student Union today and on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Working in pairs, they discussed the pros and cons of hotbed issues including gay marriage, parental notification of abortion for minors and renewable energy. Their professor, Annie Wilson, wanted her students to focus on local issues as well as this year’s race for the presidency.

On Oct.11, the College of Extended and International Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills hosted “Organizational Excellence through Quality,” an eight-hour training event organized by the Los Angeles Section 700 and San Gabriel Valley Section 702 of the American Society for Quality.
