CSU Dominguez Hills Kicks Off Strategic Planning Process


This week, California State University, Dominguez Hills embarked on a months-long strategic planning process that, when complete, will shape the university’s direction for the next five years. A series of nine town hall events took place on campus from February 23 through March 3 to collect feedback from students, faculty, staff and members of the community as to what should be the core values, mission and goals for CSU Dominguez Hills, and how the university can become a “model urban university” for the 21st century.

2009 Faculty Awards: Honorees Reflect Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service

The 2009 Faculty Awards Reception was held on Feb. 26 in the Loker Student Union, jointly hosted by the Division of Academic Affairs, the Academic Senate and the Emeritus Faculty Association. Members of the California State University, Dominguez Hills faculty and administration celebrated those faculty members being honored this year as well as milestone anniversaries, including Dr. John L. Johnson (at left), who celebrates 40 years at CSU Dominguez Hills. Also recognized were four outstanding members of the faculty, who are chosen annually for special acknowledgement during the undergraduate commencement ceremony.

Water, Water Everywhere: University Housing Will Save Resources and Energy With Conservation Project


Student housing at California State University, Dominguez Hills has become a little greener this semester thanks to a new program of the region’s water district, West Basin Municipal Water District. A ribbon cutting ceremony, held last week at University Housing, celebrated the completion of the project.

Toro Leadership Challenge: Members of Campus Community Present Life Skills Workshop for Students

Suzy Cervantes Davila hopes that students at California State University, Dominguez Hills will add another set of lectures to their classes this spring with the “Toro Leadership Challenge (TLC): Life Skills” workshops. The program features professionals from the on- nd off-campus community who give presentations on basic life skills including public speaking, good credit, ethical decision-making, relationships, and self-defense.

Thomas Landefeld: Professor of Biology Visits Historically Black Colleges

Thomas Landefeld gave career development seminars at several Historically Black Colleges and Universities in February, sponsored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Minority Access to Research Careers program. The professor of biology and pre-health advisor at California State University, Dominguez Hills presented “Becoming a Scientist: Considerations for Minority Students in Choosing a Career in Science," and met with students and faculty individually and in groups to discuss the importance of grooming minority students for doctorate programs in the science and health fields.
