CSU Dominguez Hills Kicks Off Strategic Planning Process

California State University, Dominguez Hills is embarking on a months-long strategic planning process this semester that, when complete, will shape the university’s direction for the next five years.

The first visible signs of the process concluded this week as the university hosted the last of nine town hall events to collect feedback from students, faculty, staff and members of the community as to what should be the core values, mission and goals for CSU Dominguez Hills. The town halls took place from Feb. 23 to March 3 in the Loker Student Union ballroom.

“We’re trying to get at what does it mean to be a model urban university,” Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Sue Borrego said as introduction at one of the sessions. “It’s not for me to decide. It’s not for the president to decide…. The poetry of this place will emerge from the collective voice.”

Attendees of each feedback sessions spent nearly two hours participating in discussions and interactive exercises to help answer that question. In one exercise, they drew images on large flipcharts of what a model urban university should aspire to be. Common themes emerged from one session and included, among others, diversity, accessibility and making connections with the surrounding community. Another exercise had groups writing a collaborative free-form poem that started with the line “CSU Dominguez Hills is the model urban university.”

With the feedback sessions completed, a committee comprising faculty and staff members, who Borrego called “synthesizer,” will come together to process the information collected during the sessions and from an online survey to draft a strategic plan. The draft will be circulated to various campus constituencies for further feedback and refinement. This process will take place in late March. A rollout of the final version of the strategic plan is expected by the end of May.

The campus and community still has an opportunity to participate in the online survey. To take the survey, click on the ‘You Tell Us’ link from the CSUDH home page, www.csudh.edu.
