Exhibit Explores Multi-Cultural Influences Of Two Los Angeles Ceramic Artists


“Forth and Back: The Migration of Influence in the Work of Phyllis Green and Karen Koblitz,”will open on March 17 in the University Art Gallery and continue through April 22. An exhibition featuring 30 works of art by prominent Los Angeles ceramic artists Phyllis Green and Karen Koblitz and curated by Jim Keville, assistant professor of art at California State University, Dominguez Hills, “Forth and Back” explores the variety of world cultures that inspire these two artists and those influences help form their individual artistic expressions.

Brenda (Arrieta) Killian (1977-2009): Actor, Director and Playwright Leaves Legacy of Community

Theatre arts alumna Brenda (Arrieta) Killian (Class of ‘01, B.A., cum laude, theatre arts/history) lost a nearly year-long battle with breast cancer on March 6 near her home in Portland, Ore. The 31-year-old Southern California native was pregnant with her second child last year when she learned she had breast cancer. While undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy, she gave birth to a healthy daughter last September. She died one week after learning that the cancer, which seemed to have been successfully treated, had returned.

Jonathon Grasse: Exploring the Gamelan Ensemble Influence in America

Assistant professor of music Jonathon Grasse presented his paper, “Revisiting Lou Harrison’s Work for American Gamelan Featuring Solo Western Instruments,” as part of a panel on American music at the “Music in the 21st Century: Illuminations and Reflections” symposium held on Feb. 7at San Francisco State University. He also gave the Harrison presentation at the meeting of the Southern California and Hawaii chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology at UCLA later in the month.

Richard Malamud: Tax Expert and Colleague Do Mind the Gap
Richard Malamud: Minding the Tax Gap

Professor of accounting and finance Richard Malamud had his article, “It’s Time to Do Something About the Tax Gap,” recently published in the most recent issue of the Houston Business and Tax Law Journal. The article, which he co-wrote with colleague Richard Parry of California State University, Fullerton, outlines the history of the tax gap and some of the reasons why people do not pay their taxes.

CSU Dominguez Hills Kicks Off Strategic Planning Process

Last week, California State University, Dominguez Hills embarked on a months-long strategic planning process that, when complete, will shape the university’s direction for the next five years. A series of nine town hall events took place on campus from February 23 through March 3 to collect feedback from students, faculty, staff and members of the community as to what should be the core values, mission and goals for CSU Dominguez Hills, and how the university can become a “model urban university” for the 21st century.
