Day at Dominguez Open House, Unity Fest Cultural Event Combine for Dominguez Fest 2009


Two major events at California State University, Dominguez Hills usually held separately have joined forces this year. A Day at Dominguez academic open house and cultural festival Unity Fest will both take place on Saturday April 18 under the banner “Dominguez Fest.” The public is invited to the day-long event to learn about the academic programs at CSU Dominguez Hills and experience the university’s – and region’s — many cultures.

Earth Day Celebration on Campus
Earth Day Celebration on Campus Includes Ongoing Speaker Series, Screening of Oscar-Nominated Documentary, “The Garden”

California State University, Dominguez Hills will mark Earth Day with a daylong focus on the natural environment and campus and community efforts to protect it. The second annual Earth Day Celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 22 in the Sculpture Garden on campus. The event is open to the public.

Political Science Students Win Top Honors at Western Model UN Conference

The Model UN class at California State University, Dominguez Hills received top honors at WestMUN 2009 (Western Collegiate Model United Nations) conference , April 2-4, at Santa Barbara City College. Political science students Nicole Evans, Andrew Reynoso and Diana Vasquez took three of the five Best Delegate awards. Another student, Chikezie Nwafor Prince, was named a runner up for his role on the UN Security Council, and nine students were selected for consideration for WestMUN committee positions next year.

Africana Studies Students Represent CSUDH at National Black Studies Conference
CSU Dominguez Hills Represented at National Black Studies Conference

The students of the Department of Africana Studies (AFS) recently attended the 33rd Annual National Council for Black Studies conference hosted by Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, Mar. 19 – 21. Each year, a group of students along with AFS advisors attend the annual conference and give a presentation based on papers they have written after conducting research.

Markette Smith, a California State University, Dominguez Hills alumna, attributes her current success as a reporter at WTOP.com News in Washington, D.C., to the education she received at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Landing the job as a reporter for the number-one news radio station in Washington, D.C., and number-eight radio station in the country, Smith has been with WTOP.com News for more than a year, and is known as the girl with the M&M’s chocolate candy dispenser on her desk.

Athletic Training Alumni Share Professional Experiences with Students

Alumni from the athletic training education program in the Division of Kinesiology and Recreation at California State University, Dominguez Hills returned to campus on March 4 to speak to current students during a mentorship session organized by instructor Willda Bingham. Fifteen alumni in careers such as physical education, athletic administration, professional sports, performance enhancement, and physical therapy spoke about their education, experiences, and the job options available to new graduates.

John Price: Physicist Debunks Movie Stunt for Science Channel Production

Not only is John Price an expert on nuclear physics – he also had the opportunity to play on TV. The associate professor of physics at California State University, Dominguez Hills was chosen to explain how a stunt in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was scientifically impossible for an episode of “Science at the Movies,” an upcoming show for the Science Channel, which will premiere this summer.
