Class of 2009 Celebrates Commencement at CSU Dominguez Hills

More than 2,000 new graduates of California State University, Dominguez Hills participated in commencement exercises at the Home Depot Center located on the Carson campus. The master’s hooding ceremony, which took place on Thursday, May 21, welcomed 490 graduate students, their families and friends to the Tennis Stadium. Jamie McCourt, president of the Los Angeles Dodgers gave the keynote address. The following morning, 1,525 undergraduate students celebrated graduation on the facility’s main soccer field. U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis saluted the Class of 2009 with her keynote address.

CSU Dominguez Hills Awarded NIH Minority Access to Research Careers Grant

Laura Robles, interim dean of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, recently announced the award of a $1,025,430 grant to the university from the National Institutes of Health. The Minority Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research program will be funded for five years, giving six students at California State University, Dominguez Hills more financial freedom to concentrate on their studies and assure their success in acquiring doctorate degrees for careers in biomedical and behavioral research.

Jim Katzenstein: Management Expert Leads Mission of Health Care and Education

As an adjunct faculty member in the management department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, Jim Katzenstein prepares students to apply classroom theories of organizational development, strategy and management to real world situations. As the director of HealthSpan International, he draws upon 30 years of experience as senior management at companies such as Keebler Foods, the A&P Grocery Company and General Cinema to help him lead the nonprofit in providing health care and education to underserved populations.

Irene Vasquez: Director of World Cultural Studies Discusses Link Between African Americans and Latinos on LA Alliance

Professor and chair of Chicana/o studies Irene Vasquez spoke recently about misconceptions surrounding African American and Latino relations during a history segment of “L.A. Alliance,” a show presented by the Los Angeles nonprofit Diverse Strategies for Organizing. In the episode, Vasquez, the director of World Cultural Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills, gives historical perspectives of the settling of the Americas by Africans and peoples of African descent in in Latin American independence movements.
