This fall, the first three-year review of Dr. Mildred García, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, was conducted by the CSU Board of Trustees and CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. The process concluded on Nov. 17 with a discussion by the trustees and an open letter from Chancellor Reed.

Anthropology Students Help Present Cambodian Culture in Long Beach



Among the many papers and projects keeping students busy this month at California State University, Dominguez Hills
is a unique collaboration with Cambodia Town of Long Beach. Students in anthropology professor Susan Needham’s Ethnographic Field Methods class interviewed and photographed artisans and experts on cultural activities such as cooking, shadow puppets, classical dance, and wedding traditions throughout the semesterand will assist the artisans when they present their work in the city’s Cambodian Arts and Handicrafts oln Dec. 6 at the Mark Twain Library.

“Dance Assemblage” to Highlight Diversity of Styles



From toe shoes to street moves and all that jazz, the California State University, Dominguez Hills fall dance concert, “Dance Assemblage,” just about has it all. Student and faculty choreographers and dancers will present a collage of dance styles that include jazz, modern, ballet, folklórico, Middle Eastern, and hip-hop on Friday, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Millage Peaks: L.A.’s New Fire Chief Works Toward a More Diverse Employee Profile for LAFD


Millage Peaks (Class of ’75, B.A., psychology) is a 33-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, but as the new fire chief of just over two months, he says that he did not appreciate the enormity of his new post until he actually took it. The Berkeley native looks forward to diversifying the profile of the LAFD by recruiting more women as firefighters and fulfilling the needs of Los Angeles County within a limited budget.

Leadership Summit for Pacific Islander Youth Focuses on Education, Empowerment




The Statewide Pacific Islander Youth Leadership Summit was held at California State University, Dominguez Hills on Nov. 13 in the Loker Student Union. With the theme, “Empowering a Healthy Generation,” the event presented high school students with information on education, physical and mental health, and career options. Breakout sessions gave students a chance to discuss issues such as staying in school, going to college, health, and exploring ethnic roots.

Town Hall on Community Needs Held at CSU Dominguez Hills



On Nov. 7, over 200 people attended a community town hall at California State University, Dominguez Hills to raise awareness of the budget cuts to the CSU system, the unemployment rate affecting the state, and volunteer and internship opportunities in the community. Featured speakers included Councilman Mike Gipson, city of Carson; David Bradfield, professor of music and chapter president, California Faculty Association; Dr. Vivian Price, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies; Dr. Frank Stricker, emeriti professor of history; Henry Fields Sr. of Justice Corps, and Mai Nowlin of Habitat for Humanity.
