“Dance Assemblage” to Highlight Diversity of Styles

From pointe shoes to street moves and all that jazz, the California State University, Dominguez Hills Fall dance concert, “Dance Assemblage,” just about has it all. Student and faculty choreographers and dancers will present a collage of dance styles that include jazz, modern, ballet, folklórico, Middle Eastern, and hip-hop with “Dance Assemblage,” on Friday, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. More than 50 CSU Dominguez Hills students and guest dancers from El Camino College will perform in the showcase of works by senior dance students and faculty.

“The fall dance concert features seniors who are more seasoned choreographers and dancers and who show significant potential to go on to professional careers in dance,” said Doris Ressl, dance professor and department coordinator.

Seniors Ashlie Borowski, Marco Carreon and Michael Nickerson-Rossi are of the second graduating class to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with a dance option through the CSU Dominguez Hills Department of Theatre and Dance. Other student works to be featured are by Rebecca Ledesma, Nathan Ortiz, and Jasmine Wyatt.

Faculty members Michelle Funderburk, Elissa Kyriacou, and Dana Maue have choreographed pieces for “Dance Assemblage” as well. Funderburk will present a reprise of “Off Balance,” which was featured in the spring 2009 concert. “Off Balance” will also be performed and adjudicated at the American College Dance Festival -Southwest Region at Arizona State University in Tempe in March 2010, along with “Forced Absence” by Ashlie Borowski and Michael Nickerson-Rossi. Dana Maue will bring student dancers from El Camino College to perform a jazz/hip-hop piece.

A silent auction will be held at both performances of “Dance Assemblage” to help raise money to send CSU Dominguez Hills dance students to attend the American College Dance Festival. Auction items will be available for bidding before the concert and during intermission.

Tickets to “Dance Assemblage” are $12 for general admission and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the University Theatre Box Office or by calling (310) 243-3589.
