Hamid Pourmohammadi: Supply Chain Management and Logistics Expert Publishes First Book
Assistant professor of information systems and operations management Dr. Hamid Pourmohammadi has recently published “Green Logistics for Regional Industrial Waste Materials and Byproducts: A Closed Supply Chain Management Model.” The text outlines a reverse logistics model that is developed to minimize the environmental impact and operational cost of converting waste and byproduct materials within a business-to-business network.
An expert on supply chain management and logistics and transportation, Pourmohammadi used the Los Angeles aluminum industry as a case study to verify the proposed mathematical model in his book. He says that the United States is catching up on implementing and increasing more environmental activities such as reusing the end-of-life materials.
“If you consider the limited environmental sources, then you can tell that there is no choice but to limit the use of these resources and try to look into other options,” he says. “One popular option is to reuse, recycle, remanufacture, or disassemble end-of-life goods. For example, if you look at HP printers, they are built in different modules that can be easily disassembled and utilized again after customers dump the used printers.”
Using paper as an example, Pourmohammadi says that often the current costs of recycling are seen as prohibitive to reusing many waste materials and byproducts.
“Everyone [in industry] nowadays actually considers recycling and reusing materials,” he says. “The major one is paper. Used papers and cardboard are collected and shipped to China from our ports and after they are recycled, some [usable] portion is returned to the United States and other markets. One of the major problems in recycling, [remanufacturing] and reusing the end-of-life goods is the high cost of these value adding processes. In some cases, it is cheaper to use virgin materials instead of recycled ones.”
With the book, Pourmohammadi says he provides a model to identify the optimum strategy in reverse logistics and a tool for policy makers to modify rules and regulations to encourage industry to adopt the practice of value adding processes.
Pourmohammadi has published numerous writings on supply chain management and operations systems, including “The Automotive Industry Supply Chain: The Evolution of Quality and Supplier Relationships” in the International Review of Business Research Papers, and “Roadblocks to Widespread RFID Implementation: Issues of Design and Infrastructure” in the European Journal of Management. “Green Logistics for Regional Industrial Waste Materials and Byproducts: A Closed Supply Chain Management Model” is his first book.
Pourmohammadi developed the undergraduate global logistics and supply chain management program and MBA and certificate programs in logistics management in the College of Business and Public Policy at CSU Dominguez Hills. He received his doctorate in industrial and systems engineering and a master’s degree in operations research engineering at the University of Southern California. He also holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in industrial engineering from Tehran Polytechnic University (now named Amirkabir University of Technology). Prior to entering academia, Pourmohammadi was a systems analyst at RADHA Co. (Research, Analysis, Design and High-Tech Advisory) in Tehran.
