CSU Dominguez Hills Named to President Obama’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

California State University, Dominguez Hills has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, one of only 16 universities in California and only 115 institutions nationwide to be named to the Honor Roll’s “with distinction” list. Honorees are chosen based on criteria including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Master’s of Social Work Program Earns Accreditation by National Council

The Master of Social Work program at California State University, Dominguez Hills has recently received full accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education, a national organization focused on the training, research and career advancement of social work professionals. Larry Ortiz, professor and chair of the social work department (at right), says that students are drawn to the four-year-old program largely because of its “commitment to diversity.”

Super Sunday: President Mildred García Promotes Importance of College for African American Students at Crenshaw Christian Center

President Mildred García represented California State University, Dominguez Hills in a CSU Super Sunday event at Crenshaw Christian Center on Sunday, Feb. 28 in Los Angeles. The systemwide initiative sends the presidents and other representatives of the 23 campuses to African American churches in their communities during Black History Month to inform and encourage parents and youth about the importance of higher education.

Census 2010: CSU Dominguez Hills Encourages Local Community to Stand Up and Be Counted

As part of efforts to build public awareness of the 2010 United State Census, a national road tour visited California State University, Dominguez Hills on February 24 providing information on why it is important to participate and be counted with several Census 2010 representatives on hand to educate the Dominguez Hills campus and community. On Feb. 27, the university also hosted the Southern California Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Census 2010 Kick-Off with distinguished guests Robert M. Groves, director, U.S Census Bureau (at left) and Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega (D- American Samoa).

New Calligraphy Exhibit and Student Showcase Opens March 17 at University Art Gallery

On exhibit at the California State University, Dominguez Hills University Art Gallery March 17 – April 21, is “Art of Ink: Traditional and Contemporary Calligraphy with Seal Images,” featuring 30 recent works of calligraphy by artists locally and abroad. The gallery will also exhibit the second installment of the “Student Showcase” series, which will feature student ceramics and paintings created in classes taught by Jim Keville, assistant professor, and Gilah Yelin Hirsch, art and design professor.
