University to Unveil 50th Anniversary Commemorative Artwork by Artist Synthia SAINT JAMES

Renowned artist Synthia SAINT JAMES will be on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills on Monday, August 23, to unveil a commemorative painting and poster in celebration of the university’s 50th anniversary — one of four by local artists to be unveiled this year. The unveiling will take place at a reception beginning at 2 p.m. in the ballroom of the Loker Student Union as part of the university’s fall convocation. University President Mildred García will preside over the fall convocation at 9 a.m. in the University Theatre; it will be broadcast live at dhtv.csudh.edu.

SAINT JAMES is an international award-winning painter, illustrator, and architectural designer whose signature style is the use of bold, bright colors and shapes. Her artwork was featured on the first U.S. postage stamp for the Kwanzaa holiday and has graced the covers of books by such best-selling authors as Alice Walker and Terry McMillan. The Los Angeles native and self-taught artist has also designed ceramic murals, stained-glass windows and large scale paintings for airports, government buildings and hospitals.

García contacted SAINT JAMES after a talk and book signing the artist gave on campus in March 2009 and asked if she would create a painting to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary. The piece is one of four artworks that will be unveiled this year as part of anniversary celebration. Posters of each piece will be created and available for sale.

Los Angeles-based Hispanic artist Aydee Lopez Martinez, plein air landscape and neoclassical artist Alexey Steele, and Japanese American artist Mary Higuchi are creating the other pieces. Their artwork will be unveiled at different points throughout the 2010-11 academic year. Each artist was asked to create a piece of art not only because of they are noted in their field, but because they represent the rich cultural tapestry that is CSU Dominguez Hills.
