President García Attends Signing of White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

Dr. Mildred García, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, was in Washington D.C. at the start of the week to participate in the two-day National Education Summit and Call to Action hosted by the U.S. Department of Education. On Tuesday, she was one of only 10 Hispanic education leaders and students on stage with President Barack Obama as he signed the executive order renewing and revising the 20-year-old White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

CSU Dominguez Hills Represented at SACNAS
Eleven students from the Minority Biomedical Research Support program and the Minority Access to Research Careers program at California State University, Dominguez Hills attended the 2010 national conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), which took place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Anaheim. Several students, including Kumar Tiger (at right) presented their research.

Sisters United: Mentorship Program for Black Female Students in Fifth Year

From its beginnings in 2005 as a small discussion group for black female students residing in campus housing, Sisters United has grown to encompass the needs of all African and African American female students at California State University, Dominguez Hills. By facilitating one-on-one mentorships with faculty or staff members, the program has been instrumental in ensuring the success of students by helping them balance maintaining academic excellence with all other aspects of their lives.

Thomas Landefeld: Guiding the Path for Minority Graduate Students
Professor of biology Thomas Landefeld recently presented talks at Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Miss., and at Truman College in Chicago. His topics, “What makes a good personal statement and why it’s important” and “Making the right career choice in science and how to prepare once you do” were geared toward minority students who are preparing to apply to graduate school. He also spoke on “Making the right career choice in the science and what to do once you make it” at Alabama State University to MARC U*STAR students.

Franklin Strier: Putting the Cap on Executive Compensation

Professor of business law Franklin Strier has a chapter on “Reform Proposals” in the forthcoming book, “The Handbook of Trial Consulting,” which will be released by Springer next month. The volume examines trial consulting as a form of applied psychology. In the chapter he wrote, Strier examines issues such as the effectiveness of trial consultants, the assurance of an impartial jury, and public perception of trial jury legitimacy under the influence of a trial consultant.
