Office of Government and Community Relations

Legislative Priorities

The Office of Government Relations serves as the primary liaison between CSU Dominguez Hills and all levels of government. We also advocate on behalf of the university community to ensure adequate levels of state and federal support for higher education

Securing the resources that CSU Dominguez Hills requires to remain a leading urban university requires the active support of our faculty, students, staff and alumni. From this website, you can remain up to date on the activities of the Office of Government Relations and learn how to get involved in helping CSUDH secure the resources it needs to remain a superior university.

FY 2011 Federal Appropriations Priorities

Veterans University
An educational and rehabilitation consortium made up of CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU Long Beach in collaboration with the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center proposes the creation of Veterans University. This multidisciplinary concept includes nursing, prosthetics and orthotics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, psychology, counseling, criminal justice, communicative disorders, radiation therapy, recreation therapy, kinesiotherapy, and many other programs that lead directly to employment in high need workforce areas throughout California.

An earmark of $5,000,000 is requested for the creation of Veterans University to specifically serve veterans returning from Iraq, Afghanistan and other designations overseas, who are from the California region. Veterans are welcomed to universities throughout California but few offer a comprehensive model of academic and certificate programs that track veterans, ensure that services address their needs, and help them find employment when they leave academic and certificate programs.

Nursing Clinical Skills Learning Laboratory
The Clinical Skills Learning Laboratory at CSU Dominguez Hills in our School of Nursing will open an expanded and newly renovated Skills Lab in late 2010, so the university can continue to provide excellent nursing education, produce competent nurses, and expand its academic offerings to include a generic nursing program. Funding for the physical construction of the lab was provided by the CSU Office of the Chancellor. Funding is required to furnish the lab with state-of-the-art equipment.

An appropriations request of $709,930 is being made to provide necessary equipment that would include high-tech human patient simulators, hospital beds with addition mannequins, a completely-equipped critical care bed unit, examining table units, as well as office furniture and equipment for a 30-seat computer lab and classroom.

STEM Research and Recruitment
This project will support recruitment and retention efforts at CSU Dominguez Hills to increase the number of underrepresented students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. This project would also create a pipeline of students from local high schools and community colleges who would enter CSUDH and continue through to placement in top research universities for graduate and professional studies. College classes will be offered at no cost in local high schools in the 37th Congressional District to improve the quality of entering students and recruitment efforts. An earmark of $547,980 is requested.

Cambodian Research and Learning Center
This project will establish a community-based Cambodian Research and Learning Center at the Historical Society of Long Beach focused on doumenting and preserving the ethnohistory of the Cambodian diaspora inthe 37th Congressional District of California and developing community-based research and training programs for undergraduate and graduate students. The learning center is modeled after a nationwide community engagement movement which calls for collaboration between higher education institutions and their local communities for the mutually beneficial exchange and production of knowledge and resources.
