Glenn Anderson Biography Will Be Unveiled
During Reception at Borders Bookstore
Former Congressman played an active role in developing the South Bay
Carson, CA - The vibrant and colorful life of former Congressman Glenn M. Anderson will be honored at the unveiling of a new biography of his public service during a special reception at 5:30 p.m., Dec. 6, at Borders Bookstore located at 3700 Torrance Boulevard, Torrance. History buffs, political activists, educators and anyone interested in the past and future of the South Bay area of Los Angeles County are invited to attend the reception.
Congressman Anderson, who played an active role in the effort to help establish California State College, Dominguez Hills, amassed a career that spanned a half-century of dedicated public service. From his days as mayor of Hawthorne in the 1940s, to his role in the California State Assembly, Congressman Anderson served two terms as lieutenant governor of California. Glenn Anderson worked tirelessly to improve the status of life for his constituents in the South Bay.
As mayor, Anderson
was an advocate and supporter of the aviation industry in the Hawthorne-Inglewood
area. As lieutenant governor, he played a role in creating the State Master
Plan for Higher Education, and was instrumental in establishing a state college
at Dominguez Hills. During his 24 years as a member of Congress, Glenn Anderson
led the effort to build many public works projects, including various harbor
improvements, a mass transit system and the Glenn M. Anderson (Century) Freeway.
The new biography vividly chronicles his life. Author Harold Garvin, professor
emeritus at Harbor College and Mrs. Lee Anderson, the congressman's widow, who
wrote the introduction, will personally be available to sign copies of the book.
CSU Dominguez Hills Emeritus Faculty member and Glenn M. Anderson Collection
Advisory Committee member, Dr. Judson Grenier, will also be present during the
reception. Mrs. Anderson, a successful businesswoman, was a partner with the
Congressman throughout most of his career.
California State University, Dominguez Hills, which is sponsoring the publication of this new biography, is the home of the massive Glenn M. Anderson collection of selected papers, photographs and artifacts. Former Torrance Mayor Jim Armstrong is a member of the advisory committee, which provides guidance to the library on development and usage of the collection. Profits from all book sales will be donated to California State University, Dominguez Hills.
