California State University, Dominguez Hills to inaugurate James E. Lyons, Sr.

California State University, Dominguez Hills will inaugurate its 7th president, Dr. James E. Lyons, Sr. on Thursday, March 22, formally completing the observance of its 40th Anniversary.

Participants will include administrators, faculty and student and staff representatives, consul generals of foreign governments, dignitaries from national, state, and local government, and officials from higher education and the public schools.

Presiding will be Gilbert D. Smith, honorary member of the President’s Advisory Board, and former mayor of Carson. And, investiture of President Lyons will be by Charles B. Reed, chancellor of the California State University.

Having served as president at Bowie State University in Maryland and Jackson State University in Mississippi, Lyons assumed the presidency of CSU Dominguez Hills on July 1, 1999, bringing with him a wealth of experience. He has served in numerous arenas - from the Peace Corps and the classroom to executive offices and boardrooms – and has received numerous awards.

Since arriving at Dominguez Hills, for example, Lyons has received the Neag School of Education Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater, the University of Connecticut, and Zeta Rho chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity named him “Citizen of the Year 2000.”

Moreover, in February, Lyons received the Peace Corps’ Franklin H. Williams award – named after the veteran diplomat, ambassador, educator, civil rights activist, and Peace Corps director in Africa - for his service in the U.S. Peace Corps and his continuing community involvement.

And, he was recognized the same month by the Los Angeles County Alliance of Black School Educators with an award entitled, “We Honor Our Own.” In accepting the honor, Lyons noted that he was the only “the only person in the country who grew up in the projects and has been president of three universities.”

The inauguration will begin at 10 a.m. in the University Theater and is expected to last 90 minutes, with a reception to follow. California State University, Dominguez Hills, is located at 1000 East Victoria Street, Carson.
