Outstanding Citizens Honored With
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast Awards

Annual Breakfast provides forum to honor the legacy of Dr. King

Carson, CA - Private citizens, local civic groups and students who have made outstanding efforts to advance the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by improving social conditions will be honored during the eighth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast Awards 2002 at the Carson Community Center on Feb. 5. The awards breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue through 10:00 a.m. The community center is located at 801 East Carson Street.

Each year, California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and the City of Carson pay special tribute to groups and individuals whose work in the areas of social justice and community service best exemplify the ideals that guided the life and beliefs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, awards will be presented in the categories of Social Justice, Student Communiversity Service and Drum Major for Justice.

"We are very excited to again be a part of such an important event in our community," said university President James E. Lyons, Sr. "This breakfast gives us the opportunity to focus our collective attention on the common threads that tie our society together: love for humanity, the pursuit of harmony and happiness, and respect for the freedom to pursue a diverse and relevant education." Dr. Lyons added, "We must never forget that our country has aggressively fought for educational freedom. We can do no less than honor the legacy of Dr. King by working to retain the rights of everyone in our society to obtain a quality education."

Tickets for the awards breakfast can be purchased for $15 per person by calling Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson at (310) 243-2114. "The Unity Breakfast Awards has become a signature kickoff to our university's observance of African American History Month," president Lyons explained. "We are looking forward to a great turnout."
