CSUDH Presents the Creator of Kwanzaa To Discuss Shared Burdens of Global Crisis

Discussion is part of the Distinguished Faculty Arts and Lecture Series

Carson, CA - California State University, Dominguez Hills welcomes Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chair of the Department of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to speak on the topic: "Sharing the Burden and Possibilities of the Crisis: Towards an Ethics of Sharing in the World," on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at 4 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Among his many credits, Dr. Karenga is the chair of the President's Task Force on Multicultural Education and Campus Diversity at CSULB. He has written numerous scholarly articles and books including: "Introduction to Black Studies & Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture, Commemorative Edition." Dr. Karenga also serves as the executive director for the African American Cultural Center and Kawaida Institute of Pan-African Studies in Los Angeles.

"Dr. Karenga's brilliant scholarship has helped shape the curricula of universities around the country," said Dr. Hansonia Caldwell, professor of music at CSUDH. "And his work in creating the Kwanzaa Festival has reached past the boundaries of the academy, engaging the full international community in an activity that reinforces important positive values," Caldwell added. Caldwell, a member of the Distinguished Faculty Arts and Lecture Series committee, continued, "Most significantly, Dr. Karenga is an active scholar who remains focused upon the issues of contemporary society. His recent study and analysis of the current volatile global crisis contributes a perspective that will help our students and our community understand the challenges of today. We are honored to have him on campus."
