California State University, Dominguez Hills
Begins Weeklong Celebration of Cinco de Mayo

Carson, CA - California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) celebrates the beginning of a week of activities to recognize Cinco de Mayo today, April 29, with a viewing of "Chicana/Chicano Cinema" and ending on Monday, May 5, with the first CSUDH Cinco de Mayo Soccer Tournament. This celebration is being held in honor of the rich diversity at CSUDH and the large role that Chicana/o students contribute to the University's rich cultural life.

"When the French first invaded Mexico in 1862, their militia was soundly defeated at Puebla on May 5," said Jose Lopez-Morin, professor of Chicana/Chicano Studies. This date has since taken on special meaning and annually celebrated by Chicana/o peoples. "These folkloric festivities soon began to spread throughout the American Southwest or Greater Mexico and developed into a declaration of Mexican-American identity and culture in the United States-a cultural affirmation and celebration that does not recognize the imaginary line that divides Mexicans from Mexican-Americans, " Lopez-Morin said.

Sponsored by the Multicultural Center and the Cinco de Mayo Organizing Committee, this year's celebration promises to be a true festival of arts from plays to jazz music and is punctuated by a Chicano Impromptu Hour with Teatro Dominguez. The annual Honor Awards Banquet is slated for Friday, May 3, to pay tribute to Chicano/Latino students who have distinguished themselves through outstanding academic achievement.

The public is encouraged to come and participate in this special week of fun and free activities. A full calendar of the week's events is attached for your reference.
