High School Students from Houston Visit
Cal State Dominguez Hills For Outreach/Recruitment Program

Carson, CA - Forty-two Houston-area high school students will visit the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) tomorrow (July 18) as part of the university's ongoing recruitment program. Taking advantage of the summer session, the ninth-through 12th-graders will be welcomed to campus by Joe Coldren, university outreach and information services director, and be given a tour of the campus.

"We are really excited to have these students on campus and are encouraged that they have traveled such a long distance to take a close look at the many advantages and programs that we have to offer," Coldren said. "While this not normal that we receive a delegation of this size from outside California, it's still indicative of the type of recognition that Cal State Dominguez Hills commands as a university of choice among community college transfer students and high school juniors and seniors across the country."

The students learned about Cal State Dominguez Hills through the Upward Bound Program, which is sponsoring the visit. Maria Elda Cisneros, director for the program, said the students are intelligent, promising youngsters who met specific requirements for the program. "Our program takes students from low-income homes and sectors of the community and assists them in preparing for and being accepted into institutions of higher learning," Cisneros said. "The Upward Bound Program has been around since 1964 and with 700 chapters throughout the United States; we have made a major impact in broadening the cultural perspective of hundreds of low-income youth."

Cisneros said CSUDH was selected because of the positive reputation the university has gained over the years as a college of opportunity. California State University, Dominguez Hills takes pride in offering a 'World of Opportunity' to everyone who desires a quality higher education.
