Western Association of Schools & Colleges Approves Online Degree
In Quality Assurance for California State University, Dominguez Hills

Carson, CA - California State University, Dominguez Hills, (CSUDH) today announced that the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) has just approved an online B.S. in Quality Assurance. The approval means Cal State Dominguez Hills now has a bachelor's program to complement the existing online Master's of Science in Quality Assurance program. Quality Assurance is an interdisciplinary profession utilized in all areas of management in manufacturing, service, government, and health care organizations.

Cecile Lindsay, Ph.D., associate vice president for academic programs and dean of graduate studies and research says the WASC approval helps the university respond to a growing demand for the program. "With this new program, CSUDH has responded to an educational need expressed by the communities we serve. Quality Assurance professionals in area labs, businesses, corporations and agencies have requested this program."

Lindsay maintains CSUDH is positioned to better serve a broader range of students. "Before, we were able to serve only students who possessed the bachelor's degree in a related field. Now, we are able to address the needs of working professionals who could benefit from an undergraduate degree in Quality Assurance."

"The BSQA curriculum is unique, pulling together many different aspects of quality, including a Measurement Science option. Dominguez Hills now offers eight distance learning degree programs, continuing our leadership in distance learning," said Marge Gordon, dean of extended education. Gordon said CSUDH has received a $150,000 endowment from the Muriel Mantes Family Foundation to support students in the measurement sciences. Scholarships are available to students who are in the second year of the measurement sciences option.

Quality Assurance, as an academic discipline, has shown positive growth in recent years. "CSUDH has a strong track record of success with online programs," Lindsay says. "We normally graduate 20-25 students from our Master's of Science in Quality Assurance (MSQA) each term." Under the new program, students will typically transfer in all or most of their general education requirements from community colleges. "These students will complete upper division general education and major requirements as part of the online program," Lindsay says.

The online MSQA has been offered at Cal State Dominguez Hills since 1996 and has grown considerably over the years. The program is offered through the university's Extended Education division.
